This December we had special events with Khao Suppers and we couldn’t be happier with this friendship that has developed over the last two years.
Here’s a small sample of what we had the pleasure of witnessing.
Every year, B28 has a special Christmas dinner, and this year we had the privilege of hosting the Christmas Dinner for Casa Ganapati, a yoga school in Porto, with Khao Suppers leading the event. And yes – we accepted the challenge of opening our doors to 40 people (we know, crazy, but good-crazy).
This time Punam chose a buffet format, where a variety of appetizers were served, leading up to the famous main course, but never forgetting dessert. The atmosphere was festive, celebratory, and filled with conversation among friends.
It was a special Christmas dinner, with flavors that transported us to northern India, a country some students of this Yoga school are already accustomed to visiting for their annual retreats.
We definitely recommend following Casa Ganapati for more information about classes, yoga practices, retreats, and events.
On Saturday, December 16th, we hosted a partnership between Khao Suppers and Marisa Vieira Yoga for a special day.
Punam from Khao Suppers presented Chai, a famous hot drink made with black tea and spices.
Each ingredient was explained, how each one interacts in this aromatic blend, the process for obtaining this drink, and in addition to having the privilege of tasting this marvel during the Workshop and Lunch day, we also made our own chai sachet to take home and enjoy again!
The day was filled with intimacy and the sharing of knowledge, with conversations between friends, acquaintances, and strangers, where those who didn’t yet know each other ended the day as if their friendships had lasted for a long time.
Before the magnificent lunch that awaited us, we started by having a conversation about spices, one of which we know very well in Portugal, curry, and we were absolutely surprised by what a curry leaf is!
Fresh curry leaf is the main ingredient in curry mix, but did you know that what we know as curry mix is a complex mixture of dried curry leaves with pepper, turmeric, cardamom and other spices? And then, depending on the type of curry, it will have another spice base, such as Madram, Garam Masala, etc.?
It was funny to realize that what we consider a basic condiment that is on the shelf of every kitchen is actually not so basic and contains much more than we think!
During our conversation, Punam told us how much Portuguese influence we can find in India, and how it’s part of her family heritage, such as the potato. Many traditional Indian dishes, especially in Gujarati cuisine, are vegetarian and vegan, and one of the most used ingredients is the potato! It serves as a base for sauces, in vegetable mixes for tarts, cakes, curries, and much more. And until the Portuguese went to India, the potato wasn’t known at all there – and here we see how the world as we know it is shrinking, how we all have influence over ancient traditions, and how…
We had the pleasure of trying another delicacy from Khao Suppers, this time the famous Indian dish Dhal – we can describe it as almost like a lentil and spice stew that warms the soul on winter days.
This type of dish is served with rice and because it can sometimes be slightly spicy for some palates, yogurt is added as a side.
It was a day of special sharing among all the participants, and we saw a different side of dear Punam.
What’s the point of living if we don’t have different experiences throughout our lives?
We hope to continue to surprise, to learn, to meet new people, and to have the opportunity to open our doors to you!
